Gilled paddle

Enormous strength and endurance is required for traditional canoe travel between the islands. From ancient time until now the paddle has been a symbol of these human characteristics.
The spirals traditionally represent a regrowth, in the same manner the new fern unfurls from the old. In addition to this I find it also pleasing that the spiral is a common form in the hydraulic action as one draws a paddle through the ocean.  The repeating pattern or “gills” up the blade personify how it is possible to adapt and harmonize with your environment.
I have used traditional binding techniques and a couple of sterling silver dowels unite the indigenous Koa wood with the beautiful and sacred jade.

The cording is adjustable for your comfort and will soften in a short time of wearing. I have made this art with much love and respect, and while you wear and handle it, your Mana (life force) is added to the stone via the oils in your skin as well as your intentions. The art will grow with you
